In this article, I’ll be explaining the 4 key components on completing a thorough SWOT analysis so that you will feel confidently ready to take your reflections into realisations.

Time to get started

The first step is to grab a pen and paper and divide the page into four quadrants outlining strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities.

Next, you’ll need to go through each quadrant, it is now your time to critically reflect on each quadrant and consider the following key points. Take note of all of the points that come to mind, and try to keep it as simple and organised as possible starting with the most important areas of your career. If you struggle to think of anything, take a break and consider asking friends, and colleagues to support you in identifying any potential blind spots.

Try to keep your analysis balanced and free from judgement. To support you, here is a break down on how to fill out each of the four quadrants.

Strengths (S):

These are your internal, positive attributes, skills, and resources that give you an advantage. Recognising your strengths helps you capitalise on them for personal and professional growth. You’ve just spent quite a lot of time delving into your personal strengths, so use this opportunity to highlight your key takeaways.

Reflect on the following questions:

  • What am I naturally good at?
  • What do my colleagues always complement me on?
  • What/Who brings out the best in me?
  • What abilities, skills or strengths have supported me in achieving my goals in the past?

Weaknesses (W):

Weaknesses, on the other hand, are internal roadblocks hindering progress. They could be skill gaps or habits requiring transformation. Identifying weaknesses empowers you to refine your approach and present the best version of yourself.

Reflect on the following questions:

  • What skills do I aspire to improve?
  • What internal aspects might be holding me back from achieving success?
  • Recalling past setbacks, what lessons can I learn to strengthen my future endeavours?

Opportunities (O):

External factors and circumstances fall under the category of opportunities—elements waiting to be seized for your benefit. Recognising opportunities equips you to make informed choices about your future.

Reflect on the following questions:

  • How is my industry positioned for growth or change?
  • In what ways can my professional network propel me toward my goals?
  • Are there strategic career decisions, like transitioning to a new field or considering lateral moves, that could expedite my journey?

Threats (T):

External elements that pose potential harm to your goals or well-being fall into the realm of threats. Identifying threats allows you to proactively plan and mitigate risks.

Reflect on the following questions:

  • Who are my professional competitors within my workplace or industry?
  • Is my industry undergoing significant shifts in direction?
  • Are there technological advancements that may challenge my current position?
